Regulatory Reform Minister Paul Goldsmith has welcomed the Statutes Repeal Bill passing its third reading in Parliament tonight.

The Statutes Repeal Bill will repeal or partially repeal 137 pieces of legislation, and will reduce the total number of laws on the Statute Books by 128.

“With this Bill we are reducing the number of public Acts on the New Zealand law books by more than 10 per cent,” says Mr Goldsmith.

Regulatory Reform Minister Paul Goldsmith has welcomed the Statutes Repeal Bill passing its Second Reading in Parliament today.

“Repealing redundant laws is just one part of the wider work we are doing to improve the quality of the law that governs New Zealanders’ lives,” says Mr Goldsmith.

Regulatory Reform Minister Steven Joyce and Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Minister for Regulatory Reform, David Seymour have today introduced a bill which will get rid of 124 redundant laws from New Zealand’s legislation.

The Statutes Repeal Bill will remove 124 pieces of legislation, and parts of eight other Acts.

“Originally we had 120 laws slated for removal. That number has now increased to 124. Overall, through this bill the number of public Acts on the New Zealand law books will reduce by more than 10 per cent,” Mr Joyce says.

A report ranking New Zealand as one of the best places in the world to do business has been welcomed by Regulatory Reform Minister Steven Joyce.

The World Bank’s Doing Business report, is an annual study measuring government regulations and their effect on business across 189 economies.

“New Zealand has been ranked second for ease of doing business for the second year in a row. It goes to show that New Zealand is a great place for investment and growing businesses,” say Mr Joyce.

The Minister for Regulatory Reform, Steven Joyce, and the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Regulatory Reform, David Seymour, have today released a draft bill to repeal a range of redundant legislation.

The Statutes Repeal Bill will remove 120 pieces of superfluous legislation, and parts of eight other acts. It is being consulted on before it is introduced to Parliament.

“The proposed Bill would reduce the total number of public Acts in force by more than 10%,” Mr Joyce says.

Greater use of exposure drafts of new laws, stronger expectations and reviews of crown regulators, and more transparent cost recovery practices, are among changes announced to improve New Zealand’s regulatory system by Regulatory Reform Minister Steven Joyce.

The Government has accepted, or partially accepted all 44 recommendations from a 2014 Productivity Commission report which noted that New Zealand’s large stock of regulation was not keeping up with a changing world.
