Fiordland Marine Guardian reappointed
EnvironmentEnvironment Minister Amy Adams today announced that Stewart Bull has been reappointed as the Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu nominated Fiordland Marine Guardian.
“Mr Bull has been a Guardian since the inception of the predecessor group in 1995 and has a wealth of knowledge of customary fishing management and resource issues,” Ms Adams says.
“Over the years he has worked hard to protect and improve the Fiordland marine environment for future generations.”
“I would like to thank Mr Bull for his valuable contribution to the preserving the local environment and look forward to him continuing his work,” Ms Adams says.
The group of eight Fiordland Marine Guardians are appointed by the Minister for the Environment under the Fiordland (Te Moana o Atawhenua) Marine Management Act 2005.
Their role is to facilitate the integrated management of the Fiordland (Te Moana o Atawhenua) Marine Area and provide advice on this to government agencies.
“The Guardians educate and involve the local community as well assist agencies with identifying priorities for biological monitoring and other management actions.
“This is invaluable to the protection and enhancement of the unique Fiordland marine environment and its biodiversity. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Guardians for their hard work and commitment.”
