New TEI Council members appointed

Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Steven Joyce today announced appointments to eight tertiary education institution councils, which include four new council members.

“I am pleased to welcome these high-calibre council appointees into their new roles and to welcome the reappointment of a number of council members in recognition of the high-quality governance they have been providing to these institutions,” Mr Joyce says.

“I also wish to recognise the valuable contribution made by outgoing council members and to thank them for their service.”

The appointments and reappointments of council members are:

• Massey University: new appointment of Mr Colin Harvey, ONZM.
• Lincoln University: reappointment of Mr Andrew Macfarlane.
• University of Otago: reappointment of Ms Donna Matahaere-Atariki.
• Manukau Institute of Technology: new appointment of Mr Peter Winder as a member and as Chair.
• WelTec Whitireia combined council: new appointment of Dr Deborah Hume as a member.
• Eastern Institute of Technology: new appointment of Ms Jacoby Poulain and the appointment of Mr Michael Morgan, an existing member, as Deputy Chair.
• Unitec Institute of Technology: appointment of Dianne Kidd, an existing member, as Deputy Chair and the reappointment of Ms Aroha Hudson.
• Te Wānanga o Aotearoa: the reappointment of Associate Professor Dr Manuka Henare.

Mr Colin Harvey, the founder of Ancare New Zealand Ltd, is widely recognised for his contribution to the New Zealand agricultural industry. He already contributes to the development of the university through membership of the Advisory Board of the College of Business and is on the Massey University Foundation Board. In 2008, Mr Harvey was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and animal health.

Mr Andrew Macfarlane has been appointed for a second term to Lincoln University council. He is a farm management consultant who has been involved in rural sector governance since 1990.

Ms Donna Matahaere-Atariki has been appointed for a second term to the University of Otago council. Ms Matahaere-Atariki has extensive governance experience and provides a valuable link to the health sector and local iwi.

Mr Peter Winder was the Chief Executive of the Auckland Regional Council from 2005 to 2010 and is now a director of McGredy Winder & Co, which provides leadership and management services to the public sector.

Dr Deborah Hume has led strategic risk-management consultancies that worked with public and private organisations and is now responsible for Wellington’s Metro train operations (Tranz Metro) and New Zealand’s long-distance passenger train services (Scenic Journeys).

Mr Michael Morgan, an existing member, has been appointed as Deputy Chair. Mr Morgan is a partner of Carlile Dowling, one of the oldest law firms in Hawkes Bay.

Ms Jacoby Poulain is a Hastings District Councillor and an accredited Resource Management Act Commissioner. Ms Poulain is also a representative of the Ikaroa Rawhiti electorate on Te Maruata, a sub-committee of the National Council of Local Government New Zealand.

Ms Dianne Kidd, an existing council member, has been appointed as Deputy Chair and Ms Aroha Hudson has been reappointed for a second term. Both appointees have strong business and financial skills and extensive governance experience in a range of sectors.

Associate Professor Dr Manuka Henare joined the University of Auckland Business School in 1996. He is now the Associate Dean of Māori and Pacific Development and Director of the Mira Szászy Research Centre.
