Broadcasting Minister Amy Adams today announced the appointment of Sussan Turner as a Director of TVNZ and the elevation of Therese Walsh to Deputy Chair.

“As a former Group CEO of Mediaworks, Ms Turner has extensive television and media knowledge and experience and will bring real depth and substance to the role,” says Ms Adams.

“Ms Walsh has been a Director of TVNZ since 2012 and has made a considerable contribution since her appointment. She will provide strong leadership support to the board in her new position as Deputy Chair.

Broadcasting Minister Amy Adams has congratulated NZ On Air on its success in providing Kiwi content to New Zealanders for the past 25 years.

In a speech at Parliament tonight, Ms Adams said NZ On Air had played a significant role in New Zealand’s rapidly changing media environment.

“Much has changed since Parliament first enacted the Broadcasting Act 1989 which established NZ On Air,” says Ms Adams.

“Ms Withers is a highly experienced director, having held several challenging and high profile positions in some of New Zealand’s most iconic companies,” says Ms Adams.

“Her background and expertise in media positions her well to take the helm of TVNZ at a time when it’s growing its online presence.

I am very pleased to be here today to help celebrate this milestone for NZ On Air.

It’s fair to say that New Zealand television has come a long way in 25 years.

In 1989, only 2000 hours of local content were making it onto our televisions every year.

The New Zealand Film Commission had already been around for eleven years and was fostering some big screen productions. But New Zealand content had yet to secure a significant presence on our smaller screens and our radios.

An auction of new radio spectrum licences has fetched almost $17.4 million says Communications and Broadcasting Minister Amy Adams.

Yesterday was the final day of the week-long auction where 126 AM and FM radio licences were sold across the country.

“The success of this auction and record return highlights that the radio broadcasting industry still has an important part to play in the New Zealand economy,” says Ms Adams.
